Which license do I need?
Please see our licensing page for more information about each available license type. We offer Desktop, Web, ad App & ePub through our website. If you need help figuring out which license types you need, reach out and I would be happy to guide you through it. Other licensing types are available on request, please send an email to hello@alannamunro.com to inquire.
What is a font license?
A font license gives you the right to use the fonts in certain ways, you do not own the font itself. Our EULA (end user license agreement) outlines in detail what you can and can’t do with the font files.
Why employee-based pricing?
Font licensing fees are about making a best guess at how much value your company or organization will get from the font files and charging accordingly—it’s value-based pricing.
Traditional methods ask you to count users, website page views, monthly visitors, downloads, etc. which makes it complicated to purchase a license and maintain it correctly. By using the metric of “number of employees” we can estimate the value your company or organization will get from the font files based on the size (and therefore reach and potential for value) of your company.
We have a whole article about this if you want to read more!
How do I calculate “employees”?
Number of employees means how many employees you employ at your company including temporary workers. Do not count any unpaid volunteers toward your total.
What if I hire more people?
First of all, congratulations on your growth! As long as you provided the correct number of employees at the time of purchase your license remains valid, even if you grow in the future.
What if I have more than 300 employees?
Email hello@alannamunro.com and we’ll make a custom license for your needs.
Who needs the license? The designer or the client?
If the font is being used to create a commercial product such as print materials or a website, the company or organization that benefits from those products needs to own the license (usually the client). If you are a designer or agency producing these products for a client, you can temporarily use the clients license to access the fonts and create the design work for them, you do not need your own license unless you are creating commercial work for yourself.
You may purchase the font license on behalf of your client if you fill in the licensee section with your client's information during checkout.
How do I upgrade my license?
If you need to add more styles or license types, email a copy of your receipt to hello@alannamunro.com and I’ll provide you with an invoice for the difference.
None of your license options work for me, what do I do?
If your needs aren’t met by our available license types, send an email to hello@alannamunro.com and we’ll create a custom license for your needs. We recognize that the “number of employees” metric isn’t the best fit for every project. If this is the case, we can create a custom license to better fit your situation. For example, in a large organization, we can create a license for a specific department, rather than the whole company.
Can I get your fonts somewhere else?
We would love to help you here so that we can have a more direct relationship with you, but our fonts are also available on I Love Typography if you would like more traditional licensing options.
What formats do you offer?
Our desktop license will come with OTF and TTF files you can install on your computers. Our web license will come with WOFF and WOFF2 files for use on your website.
We also have variable fonts that contain multiple styles within one file. These are available separately or may come with the purchase of a full family package.
Do you have trial fonts?
Yes! You can download our full catalog here. You may use these trial fonts for internal testing such as pitching the font to a client.
Please do not share our trial fonts with others, direct them to our trial font page where they can download their own copies using our form.
Can I share the font files with my client or contractor?
Your client will need to purchase their own license for their company or organization. The license owner can provide the font files to service providers temporarily to create work for the license owner. Just make sure to communicate that the files need to be deleted at the end of the project.
How do I get my font files?
Upon successful payment, you will be taken to a download link and will also be emailed a receipt that contains a download link for your files. If you misplace this link, you can sign in to the account page to view your previous orders and re-download any font files associated with the order.
I’m having technical issues, what do I do?
We'll do our best to help solve any issue that might occur while using our fonts. Just send an email to hello@alannamunro.com and include a detailed explanation of the problem and your system specifications. In most cases, rebooting your computer and deleting the font cache will solve your issue. (You can google plenty useful step-by-step explanations of how to delete and rebuild your font cache for any operating system you’re working with.)
I lost my font files, can I download them again?
Yes. Go to the account page and enter the email address associated with your order. You will be emailed a link that will give you access to all past orders associated with that email address. From there you can re-download any font files or invoices.
What languages do you support?
For now, most of our fonts support only Latin-based languages and each typeface will list the supported languages in the languages section on their page. We aim to have a base character set that supports over 200 Latin-based languages and are in the process of adding more North American Indigenous languages to our base character set. If your language is not supported, please email us at hello@alannamunro.com and we can work with you to get it added.
What is the secret to amazing typography?
Amazing typography starts with quality fonts. Once you have that figured out it’s a journey of learning and practicing to be able to use those quality fonts in ways that express and communicate to your audience. It can be a long, obsessive journey, and you may even change your opinion on what “amazing typography” even means as you experience new ways to use fonts, but it’s worth every hour you pour into it’s discovery.
What payment methods do you accept?
We use Stripe to securely process all credit card payments in USD. We do not accept PayPal or Bitcoin.
Can I get a discount?
You save 60-70% when you purchase a font family, and 70-85% when you buy a font superfamily (discount depends on the number of files in the family, more files=more discount).
You also save if you use our bundle option to purchase multiple license types. We don’t hold sales with deep discounts like some other platforms.
Do you offer a discount for students?
Yes! Current students can purchase our Education license for free. The fonts can be used in your academic projects only, if you are doing commercial work, please upgrade to the appropriate license.
Please use your school email address at checkout.
Do you offer a discount for non-profits?
We offer a 40–60% discount to registered charities and non-profit organizations upon approval. We typically approve organizations that are working to improve the lives of underprivileged people, tackle environmental problems, restore and preserve cultures and communities, or provide youth with opportunities they may not have had otherwise. We typically do not approve discounts for organizations that advance religion or are involved in politics.
Do you offer refunds?
Sorry, all font licensing sales are final. We recommend you try the trial fonts first to make sure it’s the perfect font for your project.
Can Alanna Munro Type Foundry make me a custom font?
Absolutely! Send an email to hello@alannamunro.com with some details about what you are looking for and we can discuss to project further.
Can a font from your catalog be customized?
Yes. If you need additional language support, a certain subset of characters, or any other customizations to our existing retail fonts, reach out to hello@alannamunro.com with your request. There may be additional fees to complete this work.
Can I purchase a font and modify it myself or have another type designer modify it?
No. If you require modifications to the font files, please reach out to hello@alannamunro.com with your request. There may be additional fees to complete this work.
Common modifications include: making the tabular numbers the default, adding language support, or removing an axis from a variable font file to reduce file size. If I can’t make the modifications, I may give permission to a third party designer to make them on my behalf.
This is not to be confused with logo creation or expressive typography, which is okay! You may set a few words in the typeface, change it to outlines, and modify those letterforms—just don’t modify the actual font files.
