When faced with typesetting a novel that liberally used emojis throughout the text, Page Two brought me on board to design emojis that could nestle into the text.
Emojis are a great way to add expression to text-only communication but when setting a book, the default emojis pose problems such as being full colour and distracting the reader by standing out too much.
We were able to design a set of emojis that harmonized with the chosen book text, Lyon. We matched the weight and line thicknesses as well as the vertical metrics of the text typeface to ensure the emoji font could fit in seamlessly.
Having the emojis in a font format also made the typesetting process much smoother. Instead of having to insert images individually within the text, we encoded each emoji to a letter which allowed the designer to change the font and type the corresponding letter to quickly insert the correct emoji.
